Remove Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR
Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR is a detection name used by the Microsoft Defender anti-virus program to indicate a backdoor-type of malware. These types of malware are essentially backdoors for other malware to enter the computer. However, while this is not necessarily the case this time, there have been instances where Defender detected legitimate and safe programs as Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR, which means a false positive is not impossible in your case.
The “Malgent” in Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR refers to “malicious agent”, which means that it operates with other malicious programs. Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR is essentially a backdoor malware that, as the name implies, opens a door for other malware to get in. These backdoors may lie dormant for a while without being detected, and when they receive the command, they may allow infections like data-stealing trojans or file-encrypting ransomware to enter. These types of infections often come with pirated software, free versions of premium programs, pirated content, etc. In short, users who tend to engage in content and software piracy are more likely to encounter these types of infections.
Microsoft Defender is known to occasionally detect what’s known as false positives. This usually happens when Defender (or another anti-malware program) notices a program that exhibits behaviour that can be associated with malware. There have been reports that Microsoft Defender detected the Tor browser as Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR in the past, and that was a false positive.
Remove Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR
While Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR detections may be false positives in some cases, you should not immediately disregard them as such if they’re detected on your device. Instead, we strongly recommend you scan your computer with a different anti-malware software to see whether it detects the same thing. If nothing is detected, you’re likely dealing with a false positive. If there is something, the other anti-malware program should be able to delete Trojan:Win32/Malgent!MSR if Microsoft Defender cannot.
