Only anti-virus software installed on your computer will ever legitimately notify you about malware on your computer.

Those programs aren’t particularly dangerous but they are very annoying to deal with. Your browser’s settings may be changed and you could be forced to use questionable search engines, or be exposed to a lot of advertisements, including intrusive pop-ups.

They come attached as optional offers but are preselected to install alongside automatically. This is why it’s very important that you always pay attention when installing free programs.

If you want to prevent unwanted installations, always opt for Advanced (Custom) settings when installing freeware. Those settings would show if anything has been added to the program, and you would be able to deselect everything. The installation window will say that Default are the recommended settings but if you opt for that, all extra offers will be hidden and permitted to install alongside.

You could also pick up potentially unwanted programs by interacting with ads on sites like You could be shown fake virus alerts that claim there are a lot of issues on your computer and promote a supposed security program that would take care of everything. But instead of a security program, you’d end up downloading a PUP at best, some kind of malware at worst. For future reference, keep in mind that your browser will never display legitimate virus alerts, as it cannot detect malware.

You should also never download anything from advertisements as it is not safe. If you want a program, use legitimate sources, such as official websites or reliable app stores.

If you notice that you’re constantly redirected to or other websites, or if you notice an increase in advertisements when browsing, your computer could be infected with adware.
