Remove “Claim Fomo” scam

The “Claim Fomo” scam refers to a fake fomo website that tries to trick users into connecting their crypto wallets. fomo is a social trading platform that allows users to see trading profiles of the people they follow and keep track of what other users buy/sell. Malicious actors have created a nearly identical website (claim-fomo.family) that claims users can participate in an airdrop, or a pre-sale event. If users interact with the fake fomo site, they will be asked to connect their wallets. If users do, a cryptocurrency drainer will try to drain all funds from the wallets over a period of time.

The “Claim Fomo” scam is hosted on claim-fomo.family, which is a pretty close imitation of the legitimate site (fomo.family). The fake site looks very similar to the legitimate one, with the only difference being the URL and a “Check Eligibility” button instead of links to download the app.

Fomo is a legitimate social trading platform designed to allow users to see what the people they follow invest in and what their trading profile looks like. Malicious actors are taking advantage of the platform’s popularity in order to steal users’ cryptocurrencies. It goes without saying that the legitimate platform has nothing to do with the scam.

The “Claim Fomo” scam claims that users can participate in an airdrop or a pre-sale event. If users interact with the site and click the “Check Eligibility” button, they will be asked to connect their wallets.

If users connect their wallets, a cryptocurrency drainer will be activated. The drainer will try to steal all funds over time by initiating automatic transactions to the malicious actors’ wallets. Users may not immediately notice the unauthorized transactions, as they happen over time. Once funds have been transferred to the scammers’ wallets, it will not be possible to reverse them and get the cryptocurrency back.

Because the site closely resembles the legitimate one, with even the URL being very similar, it can be expected that many users will fall for it if the scam is promoted in a sophisticated way. It’s very important that users check everything carefully before connecting their crypto wallets to any platform.

How are cryptocurrency scams promoted?

It’s not very likely that users end up on claim-fomo.family by mere chance. Possibly, they encounter links to the site on social media, forums, or in comments under various articles.

Commonly, malicious actors exploit numerous social media platforms to promote cryptocurrency scams. X and YouTube are particularly favored among malicious actors. One common tactic involves impersonating well-known figures, such as Elon Musk, across social media. This method is especially prevalent on platform X because of its poor moderation, leading to an increase in crypto scams. The comments on Musk’s posts are often filled with fake accounts claiming he is running a crypto giveaway or promoting similar schemes. These impersonators create profiles that seem credible enough to deceive inexperienced or inattentive users, frequently including links to scams like the “Claim Fomo” scam.

In 2020, a significant number of high-profile Twitter accounts were hacked to spread a Bitcoin scam. Accounts compromised included those of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk, among others. Even reputable accounts like those of Coinbase, CoinDesk, and Binance were affected. When these accounts posted about a Bitcoin giveaway, claiming that they would double any cryptocurrency sent to them, over 320 transactions were completed in a matter of minutes, leading to nearly $110,000 being sent to the scammers.

YouTube also serves as a prime platform for cryptocurrency scams. Scammers often hijack channels with a large number of followers and post videos that feature Elon Musk, Tesla events, and messages about crypto giveaways.
