Remove Win.MxResIcn.Heur.Gen
Win.MxResIcn.Heur.Gen is a detection name used by the MaxSecure anti-virus program. There has recently been an influx of posts on various forums about MaxSecure detecting legitimate programs (e.g., Brave browser) as Win.MxResIcn.Heur.Gen. The detection is a heuristic, meaning MaxSecure considers the detected item to be behaving in a way that resembles malware. Heuristic detections do not necessarily mean malware. Users seem to come across this detection when checking whether files they download are safe using VirusTotal. If VirusTotal shows only MaxSecure detecting something as Win.MxResIcn.Heur.Gen, it’s very likely a false positive.
Using VirusTotal to check files for malware is a very good habit to have. However, situations where users upload a file only to see one anti-virus program detect it as malware are quite common. Generally, when VirusTotal results show only one anti-virus program detects something as malicious/unwanted, it’s more than likely a false positive.
MaxSecure detects several legitimate programs, like the Brave Browser, as Win.MxResIcn.Heur.Gen, potentially scaring users away from using them by accident. MaxSecure likely has some issues with its heuristic engine, and until they get fixed, the false positives may continue. If users only use VirusTotal, this isn’t a big problem because users can just ignore it if the platform shows only MaxSecure detecting it. However, if users have MaxSecure installed on their devices, the detections can get very annoying if they’re constant.
Remove Win.MxResIcn.Heur.Gen
If you have MaxSecure anti-virus installed on your device and the Win.MxResIcn.Heur.Gen false detection keeps popping up, you will need to whitelist all detected items to stop it. Alternatively, you may need to disable MaxSecure until the issues with false detections are fixed. However, it’s always a good idea to check suspected false positives with another anti-virus program. If the other anti-virus program does not detect anything, you’re likely dealing with a false positive that you can ignore.
